SEO is often talked about as if it's a single activity, but effective SEO actually combines several distinct areas of work. Two of the most commonly confused are on-page SEO and technical SEO.
On-page SEO refers to the content and structure of individual pages: your titles, headings, body content, internal links and how well a page addresses a specific search intent. It's largely about relevance — does this page clearly answer what someone is searching for.
Technical SEO, on the other hand, is about whether search engines can properly access, crawl and understand your site in the first place. This includes site speed, mobile usability, indexing issues, structured data and overall site architecture.
You can have perfectly written content sitting on a page that search engines struggle to crawl properly, and it will still underperform. Similarly, a technically flawless website with thin, irrelevant content won't rank for competitive terms. A proper SEO audit looks at both together, because ranking well requires getting each piece right.
